The ARRI ALEXA 35 has become the most used camera on high-end productions, and it is built into everything from handheld rigs to full studio builds. The accessories that matter are 26V power, heads that carry real cine payloads, and wireless and monitoring that keep up. Here is how to build out an ALEXA 35 from the Black Flag Distribution range.
The ALEXA 35 in brief
The ALEXA 35 uses ARRI's Super 35 4.6K sensor with very wide dynamic range, ARRI Textures and REVEAL colour science, an LPL mount and built-in ND filters. It is a 26V-class camera that draws around 90W, and it ships with a B-Mount battery interface.
Power: the Anton Bauer 26V Gold Mount Plus plate
Anton Bauer makes a direct-fit solution. The Anton Bauer ARRI ALEXA 35 26V Gold Mount Plus plate (SKU 8375-0254) replaces the camera's B-Mount plate and connects directly to the back of the camera with no extra cables. Anton Bauer notes that removing the installed B-Mount bracket will not invalidate the camera warranty. The same plate fits the ALEXA 265.
With Dionic 26V batteries, Anton Bauer quotes about 2.8 hours on an ALEXA 35 from a 240Wh battery, or about 1.1 hours from a 98Wh battery when handheld weight matters. Battery data runs over SMBus, so runtime shows in the camera EVF as well as on each battery's LCD.
The easiest way to order is the Anton Bauer ARRI ALEXA 35 Starter Kit: the Gold Mount Plus plate, four Dionic 26V batteries (98Wh, SKU 8275-0168, or 240Wh, SKU 8275-0169), a Dionic 26V LP4 quad charger and a 26V Shark Fin accessory plate. Our Anton Bauer battery guide explains 14V and 26V in detail.
Camera support: OConnor and Sachtler
Rigged with cine glass, a matte box, FIZ, wireless and a monitor, an ALEXA 35 build is a serious payload. The OConnor Ultimate 2560 is the reference head for feature and drama work, the Ultimate 2575E takes heavier builds, and the OConnor 1040 with flowtech100 suits lighter, faster setups. From Sachtler, the Cine 20 and Cine 30 systems bring SpeedBalance counterbalance and ARRI-compatible plates. Weigh your full build and see our OConnor head guide.
Wireless video and monitoring: Teradek and SmallHD
The Teradek Bolt 7 takes the camera's SDI output for zero-delay video to focus, director and client monitors, with the Bolt 7 Max for long-range work. Bolt 7 video is compatible with existing Bolt 4K and Bolt 6 receivers. SmallHD monitors give the operator, focus puller and DIT PageOS tools, and the Wooden Camera Director's Monitor Cage v3 protects the director's monitor at video village. The Light Widow FIZLock speeds up lens motor changes between setups.
Lighting and light control: Litepanels, Quasar Science, Chimera and LEE
Litepanels Gemini panels give soft, full-colour key and fill with gel emulation, the IP-rated Astra IP 1x1 handles exteriors, and Quasar Science Rainbow 2 tubes cover practicals and effects. Chimera lightbanks shape your sources, and LEE Filters gels such as CTO, CTB, 216 and .6 ND balance and control the light.
Camera department: OpenMoon, Setwear and Bagside
OpenMoon slates, filter tags and pouches, marks and the Crew Gear Box (browse OpenMoon), Setwear Pro Leather gloves for grip and rigging, and a Bagside Bagstation XL cart to keep the camera package organised.
