The Sony PXW-Z300 is Sony's flagship 3-chip handheld XDCAM camcorder for news, documentary and live work, so a kit around it is about dependable support, BP-U power for long days, wireless video and field-ready light. Here is how to build a complete Z300 kit from the Black Flag Distribution range.
The Z300 in brief
The Z300 succeeds the PXW-Z280. It uses three 1/2-type Exmor R CMOS sensors with BIONZ XR processing and an AI processing unit for subject recognition autofocus, records 4K up to 60p, and has a 17x zoom (about 30 to 515mm full-frame equivalent). It records to CFexpress Type A and SD, outputs 12G-SDI and full size HDMI simultaneously, and adds timecode, genlock, LAN and SRT streaming. It has a built-in electronic variable ND, weighs about 2.6 kg body only, and runs on BP-U batteries (BP-U35, BP-U70 or BP-U100) or USB-C Power Delivery with a 100W adapter.
Camera support: Sachtler
With a battery, microphone, receiver and transmitter fitted, a Z300 sits comfortably in the mid-range of a 75mm head. The Sachtler aktiv8 flowtech75 is our pick for news and documentary: SpeedLevel fast levelling and flowtech legs get you from the car to on-air quickly. The FSB 8 Mk II system is the dependable alternative, and the Ace XL Mk II suits a lighter, budget-conscious setup. See our fluid head by payload guide.
Power: the Anton Bauer BP-U100
The Z300 runs on BP-U batteries, which makes the Anton Bauer BP-U100 a natural fit. It holds 97.92Wh, is IATA compliant for flying to a story, and its top mounted, bi-directional 60W USB-C PD port can run accessories such as a wireless transmitter or on-camera light straight off the battery. It also charges at 45W from any USB-C PD source, so a laptop charger doubles as your battery charger on the road. If you also shoot FX6 or FX9, it is one battery type across the fleet. For accessories that need more power, see our Anton Bauer battery guide.
Wireless video: Teradek
With both 12G-SDI and HDMI available, the Teradek Bolt 7 takes the SDI feed for zero-delay video to a producer, director or truck, and the Teradek Ace 750 is a lighter HDMI option for client and interview monitors.
Monitoring: SmallHD
A SmallHD monitor on the receive end gives the director or producer waveform, false colour and LUTs, which is useful when shooting HDR or log for a grade.
Prompting: Autocue
For interviews and pieces to camera, the Autocue 17" Pioneer Portable Teleprompter mounts in front of the lens and packs down for travel.
Lighting: Litepanels and Quasar Science
The weather-resistant Litepanels Astra IP 1x1 is built for news and OB work in rain and dust, and the full-colour Gemini 1x1 Soft handles interview setups indoors. A Quasar Science Rainbow 2 tube adds a background accent. LEE Filters CTO, CTB and 216 match your lights to the room and soften them.
Crew and transport: Setwear, OpenMoon and Bagside
Setwear EZ-Fit gloves for handling stands and hot lights, the OpenMoon Crew Gear Box for cards, cables and batteries, and a Bagside Bagstation Mini cart for moving the kit from the car to the location in one trip.
