The Nikon ZR is Nikon's first dedicated cinema camera, co-designed with RED, and it is tiny: about 540 g body only. That makes the right accessories compact ones: a light 75mm head, smart external power, a proper monitor and external ND. Here is how to build a complete ZR kit from the Black Flag Distribution range.
The ZR in brief
The ZR uses the 24.5MP semi-stacked full-frame sensor from the Z6III and records 6K up to 60p in RED's R3D NE 12-bit RAW, alongside N-RAW, ProRes RAW and ProRes 422 HQ, with RED Log3G10 and Nikon N-Log. It records to CFexpress Type B plus microSD, uses the Nikon Z mount with 7.5 stops of in-body stabilisation, and runs on the EN-EL15c battery, with Nikon noting support for external V-Mount batteries via USB-C. Video out is micro HDMI (Type D), the design is fanless, and there is no internal ND.
Camera support: Sachtler Ace and aktiv
A ZR with a prime sits easily on the Sachtler Ace M Mk II. Add a zoom, monitor, microphone and battery and step up to the Ace XL Mk II or the aktiv6 flowtech75. See our fluid head by payload guide.
Power: Anton Bauer batteries, plates and the USB-C PD adapter
The EN-EL15c is compact, and a fanless camera recording 6K RAW will get through several in a day. Because the ZR accepts external power over USB-C, the simplest professional setup is an Anton Bauer battery on the rig feeding the camera through the Anton Bauer P-Tap to USB-C PD Adapter, 100W (SKU 8075-0361), which negotiates the right USB-C PD voltage for the connected device.
- Plate: the Anton Bauer Micro Bracket in Gold Mount or V-Mount, in the P-Tap and USB version (8375-0230 Gold Mount, 8375-0235 V-Mount), takes full-size or Micro Series batteries and gives you a P-Tap for the adapter plus a USB port. The Dual P-Tap version (8375-0227 or 8375-0232) suits rigs that also power a monitor and wireless.
- Batteries: a Titon Micro keeps the rig light; a Titon gives longer runtime.
- Under-camera option: the Titon Base with the same P-Tap to USB-C PD adapter mounts a slim 68Wh battery under the camera and leaves two P-Taps free for a monitor and transmitter.
- USB-C battery: the Anton Bauer BP-U100 has a 60W bi-directional USB-C PD port built in, so it can feed USB-C powered accessories without an adapter.
Confirm the ZR's USB power requirements with Nikon's documentation for your configuration. Our Anton Bauer battery guide explains mounts and capacities.
Rigging, monitoring and focus: Wooden Camera, SmallHD and Light Widow
Micro HDMI is the weak point on a rig, so protect it with a cage and cable clamp: a Wooden Camera Unified DSLR Cage (check sizing against the ZR) and a Wooden Camera Top Handle. A SmallHD on-camera monitor adds waveform, false colour and LUTs for Log3G10 and N-Log. Keep it level with the Light Widow Horizon Monitor Mount Kit, and mount lens motors quickly with the Light Widow FIZLock.
Wireless video: Teradek
The Teradek Ace 750 4K HDMI TX/RX Kit sends zero-delay video from the ZR's HDMI output to a director's or focus monitor, and can run from a P-Tap on the same Anton Bauer battery.
Lighting and filters: Litepanels, Quasar Science and LEE
The Litepanels Astra IP 1x1 is a dependable bi-colour key, the Gemini 1x1 Soft adds full RGBWW colour, and the Quasar Science Rainbow 2 handles practicals and effects. Plan for lens ND, and use LEE Filters CTO, CTB and 216 on the lights.
On set: OpenMoon, Setwear and Bagside
The OpenMoon Crew Gear Box keeps cards, batteries and cables organised (browse OpenMoon), Setwear EZ-Fit gloves protect your hands, and the Bagside Dolly Slider gives a light ZR smooth moves without a track.

Frequently asked questions
Can I power the Nikon ZR from a V-Mount or Gold Mount battery?
Nikon lists support for external V-Mount power via USB-C. An Anton Bauer battery on a Micro Bracket feeding the camera through the P-Tap to USB-C PD Adapter (8075-0361) is a clean way to do it, with spare P-Taps for a monitor and wireless.
Does the Nikon ZR have built-in ND?
No. Use lens ND from a matte box or screw-in filter, and LEE gels on the lights.
What tripod head suits the ZR?
A Sachtler Ace M for a light build, or an Ace XL or aktiv6 once you add a zoom, monitor and battery.
