Sony FX5 Accessories: How to Build a Complete Kit

The new Sony FX5 is a compact full-frame Cinema Line camera, so the gear that pairs best with it is support, power, monitoring, lighting and grip sized for a light but serious rig, not a heavy studio build. Because the body is small and there is no built-in ND, the accessories you add around it matter more than usual. Here is how to build a complete FX5 kit from the Black Flag Distribution range, category by category.

The FX5 in brief

The FX5 is Sony's newest Cinema Line camera, built around a newly developed full-frame, fully-stacked 16.6MP Exmor RS sensor with up to 5K capture, open gate recording, internal RAW and 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3. It records to CFexpress Type A and dual UHS-II SD cards (internal RAW needs VPG400-rated CFexpress Type A), uses Sony's new higher-capacity NP-SA100 battery (about 130 minutes of recording), and weighs roughly 734 g body only. It uses Sony E-mount, adds a high-efficiency cooling fan for long takes, and the optional XLR-H2 handle brings four-channel, 32-bit float audio. Indicative launch pricing is around $7,849 body only or $8,849 with the XLR-H2 handle.

Two things shape every pairing below: the FX5 is light, and it has no internal ND. That points you toward nimble support, compact power, and external light and filtration.

Camera support: a 75mm Sachtler head

A stripped FX5 weighs well under 1 kg, and even fully rigged with a lens, monitor, matte box and the XLR-H2 handle it stays light, so it lives comfortably on a 75mm fluid head rather than a heavy cine head. Match the head to how you actually build the camera.

Power: spares and external options with Anton Bauer

The FX5's NP-SA100 gives around 130 minutes internally, which is fine for short takes but short for a full shoot day, so plan for spare batteries or external power. A compact V-Mount or Gold Mount brick feeding the camera keeps you running for hours and powers a monitor and accessories at the same time.

Good compact options are the Anton Bauer Titon Micro 90 (V-Mount) or Gold Mount for a light on-rig battery. The FX5 accepts USB Power Delivery through its USB-C port as long as a battery is inserted in the camera, so any P-Tap equipped Anton Bauer battery can power it through the Anton Bauer P-Tap to USB-C PD Adapter, 100W (SKU 8075-0361), which negotiates the right USB-C PD voltage for the connected device. New: Anton Bauer BP-U100

Because the FX5 accepts USB Power Delivery through its USB-C port, the new Anton Bauer BP-U100 (SKU 8675-0134) is a strong fit. Its top mounted, bi-directional 60W USB-C PD port can power the camera directly with no adapter, while the built-in P-Tap and USB-A run a monitor or wireless transmitter off the same battery. It holds 97.92Wh, is IATA compliant for air travel, and charges at 45W from any USB-C PD source, so a laptop charger doubles as your battery charger. Monitoring and focus: SmallHD, Light Widow and Wooden Camera

Add an external monitor for critical focus on that 5K sensor. The FX5 has a full size HDMI (Type-A) output, so a SmallHD on-camera monitor such as the Ultra 7 or Cine 7 connects with a full size HDMI cable rather than a fragile micro connector, and PageOS puts waveform, false colour, focus assist and LUTs right on the rig.

Keep the monitor usable with the Light Widow Horizon Monitor Mount Kit, which keeps the monitor level wherever you place it on the rig. Lighting: make the sensor sing

A stacked sensor with S-Log3 and 5K rewards good light.
