The Canon EOS R5 Mark II is a 45MP stacked full-frame hybrid that shoots 8K RAW internally, so a video build around it needs light but capable support, power for long takes, proper monitoring and external ND. Here is how to build a complete kit from the Black Flag Distribution range.

The R5 Mark II in brief

The R5 Mark II uses a 45MP stacked full-frame CMOS sensor and records 8K RAW internally, plus 4K up to 120p, with Canon Log. It records to CFexpress Type B and UHS-II SD, uses the Canon RF mount and the LP-E6P battery, and weighs about 746 g with battery and card. Importantly for video, it has a full size HDMI (Type A) output, and it can run from USB power (Canon PD-E1 or PD-E2) or AC via the DR-E6P DC coupler. There is no internal ND.

Camera support: Sachtler 75mm heads

A rigged R5 Mark II with an RF zoom, cage, monitor and microphone sits well on a 75mm head. Use the Sachtler Ace XL Mk II or aktiv6 flowtech75 for a typical build, and the aktiv8 flowtech75 once you add a cine zoom, matte box and FIZ. For a stripped body with small primes the Ace M Mk II is enough. See our fluid head by payload guide.

Rigging and handling: Wooden Camera

A Wooden Camera Unified DSLR Cage adds mounting points and cable protection, and a Wooden Camera Top Handle makes low mode and handheld work easier. Check cage sizing against your exact body, grip and any cooling fan grip before ordering.

Power: Anton Bauer Titon Base and Titon

8K and high frame rate work drains an LP-E6P quickly, so carry spares and plan for external power. The Anton Bauer Titon Base Kit in the Canon LP-E6 fit (SKU 8275-0138) mounts a slim 68Wh battery under the camera on a quick release plate and feeds the body through a regulated LP-E6 dummy battery, while three P-Tap ports and a USB port run a monitor and transmitter from the same battery. One important caveat: Canon specifies the LP-E6P for some R5 Mark II functions, including 8K recording, and older LP-E6 types work only with limitations. Anton Bauer lists this fit for the EOS R and 5D series, so check with us which modes are available on a dummy LP-E6 before relying on it for 8K work.

For rigs with more accessories, a Titon Micro or Titon on a plate powers the monitor, transmitter and on-camera light all day, and Canon's own DR-E6P coupler and USB PD adapters remain the officially supported ways to power the body. Our Anton Bauer battery guide explains mounts and capacities.

Monitoring and focus: SmallHD and Light Widow

The full size HDMI port is a real advantage on a rig: a SmallHD on-camera monitor connects with a full size cable rather than a fragile micro connector, and PageOS adds waveform, false colour, focus assist and LUTs for Canon Log. Keep it level with the Light Widow Horizon Monitor Mount Kit, and mount a FIZ motor quickly with the Light Widow FIZLock Universal Motor Mount.

Wireless video: Teradek

The Teradek Ace 750 4K HDMI TX/RX Kit sends zero-delay video from the HDMI output to a director's or focus monitor. On larger sets, the Teradek Bolt 7 also takes HDMI and works alongside existing Bolt 4K and Bolt 6 receivers.

Lighting and filters: Litepanels, Quasar Science and LEE

A 45MP sensor shows everything, so light it well. The Litepanels Astra IP 1x1 is a reliable bi-colour key, the Gemini 1x1 Soft adds RGBWW colour and gel emulation, and the Quasar Science Rainbow 2 handles practicals and effects. With no internal ND, plan for lens ND. On the lights, LEE Filters CTO, CTB, 216 and .6 ND cover balancing, softening and window control.

On set and transport: OpenMoon, Setwear and Bagside

The OpenMoon Crew Gear Box keeps CFexpress cards, batteries and cables organised on the cart (browse OpenMoon). Setwear EZ-Fit gloves protect your hands, and a Bagside Bagstation Mini cart plus the Dolly Slider keep the kit mobile and the moves smooth.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Canon R5 Mark II have full size HDMI?

Yes. It has a full size HDMI Type A output, which is far more secure on a rig than micro HDMI and connects directly to monitors and Teradek transmitters.

Can I use a Titon Base with the R5 Mark II?

The Titon Base Kit in the Canon LP-E6 fit powers the camera through an LP-E6 dummy battery. Because Canon requires the LP-E6P for some functions such as 8K recording, check with us which modes are available before relying on it.

Does the R5 Mark II have built-in ND?

No. Use lens ND from a matte box or screw-in filter. LEE gels are for the lights, not the lens.

What tripod head should I use?

A Sachtler Ace XL or aktiv6 for a typical rig, and an aktiv8 once you add a cine zoom, FIZ and matte box.
