The Sony BURANO puts VENICE 2 image quality into a body built for small crews and solo operators, with in-body stabilisation, electronic variable ND and a native V-Mount battery plate. The accessories that matter are V-Mount power, a 100mm head with real counterbalance range, and wireless and monitoring to match. Here is how to build one out from the Black Flag Distribution range.

The BURANO in brief

The BURANO uses an 8.6K full-frame sensor that shares most of the VENICE 2's specifications and colour science, records X-OCN, and has dual base ISO 800 and 3200. It has a detachable PL mount with a lever-lock E-mount underneath, in-body image stabilisation for both PL and E-mount lenses, and an electronic variable ND from 0.6 to 2.1. The battery plate is native V-Mount, and the body weighs about 2.4 kg without the PL mount adaptor.

Power: Anton Bauer V-Mount batteries

Because the BURANO's battery plate is native V-Mount, Anton Bauer V-Mount batteries go straight onto the camera with no adaptor plate. Sony quotes power consumption in the region of 50 to 66W depending on recording mode and accessories, so size the battery to your day: a Titon for lighter handheld work, or the Dionic XT range for longer runtime and higher accessory loads, charged on a QUAD 6A charger in V-Mount. For studio and long static setups, a CINE VCLX NM2 block battery keeps the camera and accessories running all day. Confirm the battery's current rating against your full camera and accessory load. Our Anton Bauer battery guide has more detail.

Rigging and lenses: Wooden Camera

The Wooden Camera ARRI LPL Mount v2 for VENICE, VENICE 2 and BURANO (A00224) lets you run ARRI Signature and other LPL lenses. At video village, the Wooden Camera Director's Monitor Cage v3 protects the director's monitor.

Camera support: Sachtler and OConnor

A BURANO with a cine zoom, matte box, FIZ and wireless is a mid-weight cine build. The Sachtler aktiv16T and aktiv18T flowtech100 systems suit fast-moving documentary and solo work, the Cine 20 brings SpeedBalance and ARRI-compatible plates, and the OConnor 1040 with flowtech100 or Ultimate 2560 take heavier builds. See our fluid head by payload guide.

Wireless video and monitoring: Teradek, SmallHD and Light Widow

The Teradek Bolt 7 takes SDI for zero-delay video to focus, director and client monitors, and works with existing Bolt 4K and Bolt 6 receivers. SmallHD offers Cine 7 and camera control kits for BURANO, VENICE and VENICE 2, letting the operator change camera settings from the monitor. The Light Widow FIZLock speeds up lens motor changes and the Light Widow Horizon Monitor Mount Kit keeps the operator's monitor level.

Lighting and camera department

Litepanels Gemini and Astra IP panels, Quasar Science Rainbow 2 tubes, Chimera lightbanks and LEE Filters gels for the lighting team; OpenMoon slates, filter pouches and the Crew Gear Box, Setwear Pro Leather gloves and a Bagside Bagstation XL for the camera department.
