Panasonic AJ-CX4000 Accessories: How to Build a Complete Kit

The Panasonic AJ-CX4000 is a 4K HDR shoulder camera that keeps the broadcast B4 lens mount while adding direct streaming, SRT and NDI|HX. It is built for news, sport and documentary crews, so the best accessories keep it powered all day, support a full ENG build, and get its pictures to the people who need them, in the room or across the country. Here is how to build a complete kit from the Black Flag Distribution range.

The AJ-CX4000 in brief

The AJ-CX4000GJ pairs a 2/3-inch bayonet (B4) lens mount with a larger 11.14MP 4/3-type sensor through Panasonic's optical magnifying system, so existing ENG zooms work while the camera records 4K UHD up to 60p in 10-bit HEVC, plus AVC-ULTRA and AVC-Intra P2 formats for HD broadcast workflows. It has one expressP2 slot and two microP2/SDXC slots, HLG and V-Log, a four-position ND wheel (clear, 1/4, 1/16 and 1/64) and a CC wheel. Outputs include 12G-SDI, a second 3G/HD-SDI and HDMI. It can stream directly over RTMP, RTMPS, RTSP and SRT, tether to a 5G smartphone over USB, and run NDI|HX with an optional licence. The body weighs about 3.4 kg and runs on 12V DC (11 to 17V), drawing about 32W body only.

Power: Anton Bauer

Panasonic photographs the CX4000 with an Anton Bauer Gold Mount plate on the back, and as a 12V shoulder camera it takes standard 14.4V Gold Mount or V-Mount batteries on whichever plate your fleet uses. At roughly 32W for the body alone, a 98Wh battery gives about three hours before you add a lens servo, wireless, a light or a bonding unit, so plan on larger packs for a full news or sport day.

The Anton Bauer Titon range is the everyday choice, the Dionic XT range adds higher capacities and robust housings for the heaviest use, and the Titon Micro keeps weight down on the shoulder for lighter builds. Charge on a QUAD 6A charger. Our Anton Bauer battery guide covers mounts and capacities in detail.

Camera support: Sachtler and OConnor

A CX4000 with an ENG zoom, viewfinder, battery, microphone and receiver is a front-heavy load that wants a 100mm head with proper counterbalance range. The Sachtler aktiv10 flowtech100 and FSB 10 Mk II systems suit a typical news build, while the aktiv16T flowtech100 or Video 18 flowtech100 take a longer lens, a prompter or a bonding unit. For sport and EFP builds with long zooms, the OConnor 1040 with flowtech100 gives OConnor smoothness in a fast, field-ready package. Weigh your actual configuration and see our fluid head by payload guide.

Wireless video: Teradek Bolt 7

The Teradek Bolt 7 takes the CX4000's 12G-SDI output for zero-delay video to a producer, director or vision mixer, with the Bolt 7 Max for long-range sideline and outside broadcast work. Bolt 7 video is compatible with existing Bolt 4K and Bolt 6 receivers, so it slots into a fleet's existing wireless.

Bonded streaming: Teradek Prism Mobile

The CX4000 can already stream on its own over SRT or RTMP through a single network connection, which suits a venue with good wired internet. When you are reporting live from the field, a single phone or LAN link is a single point of failure. Teradek Prism Mobile is a camera-back bonded encoder that mounts to the Gold Mount or V-Mount battery plate on an ENG camcorder and combines up to nine connections across its built-in cellular modems, phone hotspots and Ethernet (a Teradek Core subscription unlocks the full count). It encodes HD up to 1080p60 as well as 4K HDR, and because the CX4000 has two SDI outputs you can feed Prism Mobile and a Bolt 7 at the same time. Contact us for current Prism Mobile configurations and Core plans.

Monitoring: SmallHD, Wooden Camera and Light Widow

At the receive end of a Bolt 7, a SmallHD Cine 7 or Ultra 7 gives a producer or director a bright picture with waveform, false colour and LUTs for HLG and V-Log, and the Ultra 10 suits a larger video village screen. The Wooden Camera Director's Monitor Cage v3 protects the monitor and carries the receiver and battery, and the Light Widow Horizon Monitor Mount Kit keeps it level wherever it is rigged.

Prompting: Autocue

For pieces to camera and interviews, the Autocue 17" Pioneer Portable Teleprompter mounts in front of the lens and packs down for the car. For studio or OB use, the 19" Explorer Teleprompter gives a larger, brighter screen.

Lighting: Litepanels, Quasar Science, Chimera and LEE

The Litepanels Astra IP 1x1 is IP rated for rain and dust, which is exactly what a news or sport crew needs, and the Astra IP Traveler Case Trio carries a three-light kit. The Gemini 1x1 Soft covers soft, full-colour interview lighting, and a Chimera POP bank for Gemini softens it further. A Quasar Science Rainbow 2 tube adds background colour, and LEE Filters CTO, CTB and 216 balance and diffuse the lights.

Grip: Matthews

A Matthews 20" C+ Stand with grip head and arm holds lights, flags and monitors securely on location, and its turtle base breaks down for low-angle work.

Crew and transport: Setwear, OpenMoon and Bagside

Setwear EZ-Fit gloves protect hands on the rig, the OpenMoon Crew Gear Box keeps expressP2 and microP2 cards, cables and batteries organised (browse OpenMoon), and a Bagside Bagstation Mini cart moves a shoulder camera kit from the car in one trip.

Frequently asked questions

What batteries does the Panasonic AJ-CX4000 use?

It runs on 12V DC (11 to 17V), so standard 14.4V Gold Mount or V-Mount batteries such as the Anton Bauer Titon or Dionic XT work on the battery plate fitted to the camera. Panasonic's brochure shows it with an Anton Bauer Gold Mount plate.

Can the AJ-CX4000 stream live without an external encoder?

Yes. It streams directly over RTMP, RTMPS, RTSP and SRT through wired LAN, a wireless module or a tethered 5G smartphone. For bonded cellular reliability in the field, add a camera-back encoder such as Teradek Prism Mobile.

Does the AJ-CX4000 have built-in ND?

Yes, a four-position ND wheel (clear, 1/4, 1/16 and 1/64) plus a CC filter wheel.

What tripod suits the AJ-CX4000?

A 100mm head such as the Sachtler aktiv10 or FSB 10 Mk II for a typical news build, an aktiv16T or Video 18 for longer lenses and more accessories, or an OConnor 1040 for EFP work.

Will my existing ENG lenses fit?

Yes. The CX4000 keeps the 2/3-inch B4 bayonet mount, and its optical magnifying system lets standard B4 zooms cover the larger sensor.
